Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang
An ancient stupa enshrining relics of the Buddha · The old town of Thung Yang
A time-honoured temple of the ancient town of Thung Yang, enshrining relics of the Buddha and the stage for the grand and rarely seen Atthami Bucha rite.
About Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang
Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang stands in Thung Yang subdistrict, Laplae district — the principal temple of the ancient town of Thung Yang. It is thought to have been built in the late Sukhothai period, around the reign of Phraya Lithai.
The relic stupa is Lanka-style (a rounded bell shape) set on a three-tiered square base, with subsidiary stupas at each of the four corners. It is believed to enshrine the 'Urangkhathat' relic — the breastbone of the Buddha.
Each year the temple holds the 'Atthami Bucha' rite, a re-enactment of the cremation of the Buddha, performed in remembrance of the Lord Buddha — a sacred tradition handed down over many generations.
