Staying in Uttaradit Without a Car — You Can Still Get Around
Arrive by train or coach · Near the station · Explore Laplae even without a car
Arrived in Uttaradit by northern train or coach with no car of your own — how much of Laplae can you see and how do you make merit at Wat Phra Thaen? This guide has the full answer: how to continue from Uttaradit station, which zone to stay in without a car, and the ways Hua Dum Resort can help with your travel (only what we can genuinely confirm).
Can You Really Explore Uttaradit–Laplae Without Your Own Car?
Absolutely — you just need to plan your connections a little. Nearly every northern train (Bangkok–Chiang Mai) stops at Uttaradit station in the city centre, while coaches and intercity buses arrive at the Uttaradit bus terminal in town as well. From here you're not yet in Laplae, but there are several ways to continue into Laplae (about 8 kilometres away) and on to the various sights.
There are several onward options from the city — fixed-route songthaews for the main roads, motorbike taxis for short hops, ride-hailing apps and local taxis (easier to catch in town), and daily car or motorbike rentals if you want the freedom to explore on your own. For merit-makers whose main target is Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, choosing a stay close to the temple (like Hua Dum Resort, just about 3 km away) makes your onward ride shorter and far more convenient.
Hua Dum Resort is in Laplae district, about 12 kilometres from Uttaradit city and the train station (~15 minutes by car). What genuinely helps if you don't have a car: we're only about 3 km from Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, and we're happy to suggest routes, pick-up points for songthaews, motorbike taxis, and local taxis, and car rental shops when you ask in advance. We don't run our own resort shuttle, so it's best to plan your local connections ahead of time.

Travelling Without a Car — How to Connect It All
By train → arrive at Uttaradit station in the city centre
Nearly every northern train stops at Uttaradit station in the heart of the city, the most convenient point to continue from. From Bangkok the trip takes around 7 hours or more depending on the service. See timetables and every way to travel in our guide on how to get to Uttaradit–Laplae.
By coach/intercity bus → arrive at the city bus terminal
Bangkok–Uttaradit buses arrive at the Uttaradit bus terminal in town, a budget-friendly option. From there you continue into Laplae just like those arriving by train.
Connecting from the city into Laplae/your stay
Laplae is about 8 kilometres from the city. You can continue by fixed-route songthaew on the main roads, motorbike taxi for short distances, or a ride-hailing app/local taxi. It's a short distance and doesn't take long — let your accommodation know ahead of time for advice on pick-up points.
Want flexibility → rent a car or motorbike by the day
If you plan to visit several spots around Laplae–Uttaradit, a daily car or motorbike rental is the most worthwhile and flexible option. There are rental shops in town — ask the resort for a recommendation. Prices vary by vehicle and season, so check directly with the shop.
Merit-makers without a car → stay near the temple, short connection
The big plus for those without a car: Hua Dum Resort is only about 3 km from Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, so the local ride (songthaew/motorbike taxi/taxi) is short and inexpensive. We don't run our own shuttle, but we're glad to suggest pick-up points — ideal for older travellers and merit-tour groups. See a detailed merit-making trip in our guide to staying near Wat Phra Thaen Sila At.
Choose a stay that suits travelling without a car
If your focus is a single night of errands in town, staying near the city/station lets you walk to shops — see our guide to staying in Uttaradit near the city and train station. But if you're mainly here to make merit and explore Laplae, staying in the Laplae zone near the temple and using local rides or a rental fits better. Compare every zone in our guide to where to stay in Uttaradit.
