Nam Phi Iron
The legendary steel for forging royal swords · A treasure of Uttaradit
A sacred steel renowned since ancient times, used to forge the royal swords of Thai kings — and believed to be the steel from which the sword of Phraya Phichai Dap Hak was forged.
The Legend of Nam Phi Iron
Nam Phi iron is a natural steel ore from the ancient iron pits in Nam Phi subdistrict, Thong Saen Khan district, Uttaradit. It has been famed for its strength since the days of the Ayutthaya kingdom.
In the past, Nam Phi iron was reserved for forging the royal swords and weapons of Thai kings. There is an important pit known as the "Bo Phra Saeng" (Royal Sword Pit), restricted for royal use, and the "Bo Phra Khan" pit — and it is believed that the sword carried by Phraya Phichai Dap Hak was forged from Nam Phi iron from here.
Today the Nam Phi iron pits are a place of historical learning, with a museum, sword-forging demonstrations, and shops selling knives and souvenir swords made from Nam Phi iron to view and buy.
