Laplae City Gate
Landmark of the 'no-lying city' · The famous Widow sculpture
The gateway into Laplae — the landmark everyone stops to photograph — comes with the legend of the city of widows and the promise that "in this town, no lying is allowed."
About the Laplae City Gate
The Laplae City Gate is the symbol that welcomes visitors into Laplae district. Built in an applied-Sukhothai architectural style, 10 metres wide and 41 metres long and designed by the Fine Arts Department, it stands handsome and striking at the entrance to town.
The highlight is a sculpture of a young woman standing with a sorrowful face holding her small child, her husband sitting beside her with his head bowed, clutching a shoulder bag of turmeric. At the base is the inscription "Only truthful words," evoking the legend of the widow who sacrificed herself to uphold the town's rule that no one may lie.
Nearby is the Laplae Museum, displaying the way of life, woven textiles and stories of the Laplae people — perfect to visit in the same trip.
