Uttaradit Langsat & Longkong

Uttaradit's prized GI fruit · Ripens Aug–Sep

Once durian season ends, Uttaradit moves into langsat and longkong season — golden clusters of sweet-and-tart fruit that are the province's pride. This article sums up how langsat differs from longkong, when they ripen, and the best places to buy and eat them.

What Are Langsat and Longkong, and How Do They Differ?

Langsat and longkong are fruits of the same family, growing in clusters of round, pale-to-golden-yellow fruit. Uttaradit is a famous growing area — so much so that its langsat is registered as a geographical indication (GI) of the province, reflecting its distinctive local quality and flavour.

The main difference: langsat has thinner skin with a little sap, juicy flesh and a sweet-tart taste, with bitter seeds if you bite them. Longkong has thicker, tougher skin with almost no sap, dry chewy flesh, shrivelled seeds and a purely sweet taste, and is easier to peel — which is why longkong usually costs a little more than langsat. Both are delicious in their own way.

What's neat is that langsat and longkong ripen at a different time from durian. Long-Lin durian comes around May–Jul, while langsat and longkong follow around Aug–Sep — meaning if you want to eat your way through all of Uttaradit's fruit, you can come twice in a single year. Good to Know Before You Hunt Down Langsat & Longkong

1

Ripening season Aug–Sep

Langsat and longkong ripen in the late rains, around August to September depending on the year's weather. At the peak there's plenty of fruit and prices are at their best value.

2

Langsat vs longkong

Langsat has thin skin, juicy flesh and a sweet-tart taste, with a little sap and bitter seeds. Longkong has thick skin, dry chewy flesh and a purely sweet taste, peels easily and usually costs more. Pick whichever you prefer.

3

The province's GI specialty

Uttaradit langsat is GI-registered, a guarantee of quality local fruit. When you're in Uttaradit at this time of year, seek out the real thing from the growing area.

4

Buy at Hua Dong Market

Hua Dong fruit market, about 8 km from the resort, is the hub for Laplae and Uttaradit fruit — compare several sellers in one place. Opens early, with fresh produce.

5

Come more than once

Because it's a different window from durian (May–Jul), fruit lovers can visit Uttaradit in two seasons a year. Plan a durian trip and a langsat trip separately.

6

How to choose

Pick clusters with evenly yellow skin and unbroken, fragrant fruit. Good longkong peels to clear flesh with small seeds; for langsat, choose fruit that's just soft enough — it'll be sweet and juicy.
