Long-Lin Laplae Durian Season
Laplae's GI durian · Ripens May–Jul · Taste and buy at the orchard
Every year as the rains begin, Laplae becomes the durian capital of the lower north as Long Laplae and Lin Laplae ripen across the hills. If you love durian, you have to come at the right time. This article sums up when Laplae's durian season is, and the best places to eat and buy it.
When Is Laplae's Durian Season?
Laplae durian fruits once a year, ripening naturally around May to July. As a rule, early season (mid-May) yields are still small and prices high; mid-season (June) is the peak, with plenty of top-quality fruit and prices settling down; and late season (July) gets harder to find, though there's still some to taste. It all depends on each year's weather.
The stars of the season are "Long Laplae" — round-oval fruit with deep-yellow, sticky, fine-textured flesh, a sweet-rich taste and a gentle aroma — and "Lin Laplae" — cylindrical fruit with dry, creamy flesh, shrivelled seeds and a mild smell. Both hold geographical-indication (GI) status, growing to top quality only in Uttaradit. Read more about the varieties in our "Laplae Fruit" article.
The joy of coming now is eating durian freshly cut from the hillside orchards. Many orchards welcome visitors and sell at the farm gate, and if you'd rather not head up the hills, drop by Hua Dong Market — the hub for Laplae durian and fruit, not far from town. This article is an informational guide, not a durian shop; if you're interested in pre-ordering, just ask via LINE.
